What is radon?

Radon is a radioactive gas, produced by uranium decay that is found in almost all soils. It is formed deep in the ground and seeps through the ground. Radon can enter your home through small cracks and holes in the foundation.

Why is radon a problem?

Studies conducted by the EPA show that radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer in America. Unfortunately, building structures (such as your home!) are the most likely place for you to encounter dangerous radon levels. Radon seeps upward through the ground getting trapped in houses and other buildings. Radon is undetectable to the human senses making it impossible to know if you are being exposed to its harmful effects.

One factor that contributes to the risk of radon in your home is the area you live in. Idaho ranks as the eighth highest state pertaining to radon concentration, and according to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, 2 out of 5 homes tested for radon in Idaho contain unsafe levels of radon.

What can you do?
